I get a kind of high when I organize a messy area, but I am not good with the everyday upkeep.

A few years back I realized that if you have an area in your life that is clean and organized,

then you have controlled that area in your life.

Perhaps I don't feel the need to control every inch of my home or shop on a daily basis?

Or maybe I can't see the real difference on a daily basis, but I can on a weekly or monthly one?

It does feel really good when everything has a place and there is a place for everything.

Starting off the New Year with a New outlook on Life and our World.

"I Am" is a documentary by director Tom Shadyac, who directed movies like:

Ace Ventura, Patch Adams, The Nutty Professor, Burce Almighty and Evan Almighty.

He was living the high life with multiple mansions and private jets until

he had a bike accident that almost took his life. He decides to share what he discovers on his journey on what is wrong with the world and finds out what is right with it.

I watched this movie, this morning on Oprah's new network, OWN.

On Sunday mornings she presents Super Soul Sunday where she shares inspirational movies and shows.

This movie was so moving and inspirational that I highly recommend it to the entire world.

It combines history, science and cultural tradition to uncover the fact that we are all connected on a deeper level that we as hunmans cannot understand. And how we have been conditioned from very early on what success is and to compete in life for this success. Now science has discovered that we are not hard wired for competition but for democracy and cooperation and that all of nature is too. I took 2 pages of notes while watching, it was a great eye opener. My favorite part is the Law of Nature where nothing in nature takes more than it needs and when it does, it becomes subject to this law and dies off. For example; a red wood does not take all of the nutrients from the soil and a lion does not kill every gazelle, only what it needs.

We have a tern something in the body when it takes more than its share, we call it CANCER.

Every holiday season I am on the look out for a new spin on the Christmas centerpiece.

Here are a few of my favorites this year. I cannot take credit for any of them, but I do applaud the designers who made them. A note to any who attempt to construct some of these arrangements.

1. Cranberries float, so if you want to add them to water, make sure you have a lot of them.

2. A vase inside another vase is the trick to most of these. Make sure there's a space for your candy or fruit.

3. Place a large rubber band on a cylinder vase and then stick candy canes that have a bit of double sided sticky tape wrapped around their centers, under it. (this works with pencils, twigs, green beans, anything long and skinny) Tie a ribbon with a bow over the rubber band to hide it. Hot glue the candy canes to a plastic vase is another option. This is not an arrangement you want to pick up and walk around with unless those candy canes are stuck on good.

The Story of Stuff, the saga continues.

A while back I shared with you, The Story of Stuff.

This simply put video opened up my eyes to a reality that was sad, but true.

I was spending my extra time buying stuff and it never seemed to fill my happiness void.

Watch it now if you haven't yet. It's great and I'm sure it will make you think of things, like where did the stuff come from and where does it go when we throw it away, plus why does our stuff break so fast?

Then I watched the Story of Cosmetics and was blown away at all of the harmful ingredients I use everyday. It is no wonder so many people get cancer, even the children. The video helped to educate the public and the Safe Cosmetic Act of 2010 was created, click here to help and to find safe cosmetics.

My eyes were opening to issues that are extremely important. I felt informed and I felt angry too. I wanted to do something, so I shared this with you and my friends and chunked out a bunch of stuff that was actually harmful to me, my family and my enviorment. I loved these videos and I wanted more. I was feeling empowered in my own life and wanted to learn more so I watched The Story of Bottled Water.

I Stopped purchasing bottled water.

I watched The Story of Electronics.

We quit buying our kid the latest gaming system and recycled batteries and fixed our computers when they broke instead of buying new ones. (good thing I married a geek)

Then it was on to The Story of Cap and Trade.

I didn't even know what that was, but thought, as a concerned citizen of the USA, I need to get informed on the important issues of our planet, since it is the only one we have.

I just couldn't believe how big corporations do business at the expense of our planet. You would think that they would realize that they have to live on it too. I know now, by their actions, that the way big corporations think and the average person are extremely different, it is pretty much incomprehensible.
Which led me to the last video available to watch. The Story of Citizens United v. FEC.
(just a little note here:Citizens United is an extension of the Koch Brothers a.k.a. BIG OIL)

Well, the Koch Brothers, I mean Citizens United won and now big corporations can donate any amount of money to elections. We are now calling them Presidential Auctions I hear.

This sounds like all doom and gloom, but there is hope. There is one more video. It officially airs on November 8, 2011 and I will post it I promise. It is The Story of Broke. Here is the teaser.

For the past 3 years, all I have wanted to do is to move to Australia because I did not trust our government and I felt like a lab rat, with all of the toxic chemicals in our food, our homes and in our products. I felt like I had no control or say, I felt like I needed to move my family far away to a safer place. Now I am seeing that this really is not just our country but our whole world and even if I did move, I would face similar if not the same problems I am dealing with now. The rules have changed. Before, powers came from countries, now they come from giant corporations. I believe in the saying that you have to be the change you wish to see in the world. So.......let's do it. Here are a couple small videos from Annie herself, sharing more of what we can do to be that change. Thank you Annie, you are a modern day Super Woman.

We are entering the 2 week period of weather perfection here in Texas, in the evening hours of course.

I think it is considered Autumn? Still not sure. Even though our grass is dead and we are not allowed to water it or wash our cars (being in the worst drought in 100 years) we will still be dining tonight alfresco style with our Willow Nest neighbors.

Once the sun goes down the critters come out and venture into town for a drink.

So far we have seen deer, armadillos, raccoons, skunks, coyotes and a fox in our little town.

I was flipping through my House Beautiful magazines last night and realized that I am in love with the style of Chris Barrett. I have collected numerous images and gutted a few magazines that were of her designs. Her 1929 Spanish style bungalow was featured on the front cover of House Beautiful as well as a nice spread inside. Her home is only 1050 square feet (320.04 meters) and extremely charming. I love how everything is white or cream (a clean canvas) and then she adds dark woods and interesting antiques even worldly treasures, finally she adds the color with flowers, food and pillows. All of which can be changed on a whim to suit the mood or season. The roses on the front of her home are Eden Roses, must get some.

For the next few days I will have a glue gun attached to my right hand and silver glitter letters stuck to strange places on my clothing as I plow my way through Homecoming Mum season. If you don't hear back from me by Monday, the authorities should be contacted. They might find me in a cocoon of ribbons, paw prints, zebra stripes, cow bells, balloon string, glitter stickers and hot glue webs. For those of you that do not live in Texas or Oklahoma, a homecoming mum is worn at a special homecoming football game. It is a large fake chrysanthemum with loads of ribbons, trinkets and bells, plus the name of the mum owner and their boyfriend's name as well. The bigger, the better. Even the boys wear them on their arms.

This country cottage found in Mississippi looks the picture of perfection.

You will not believe what it looked like before the new owners bought it.

The whole structure had to be lifted into the air in order to install the foundation, plumbing, and insulation.

The 2 chimneys were rebuilt and the owners hand-crimped the metal roof. I am impressed.

I just found this today and thought it was blog share worthy. It is a recipe card generator from Skip to my Lou. I can't tell you how many hand written, crooked, illegible, ugly recipe cards I have given people who want a recipe I made. Sad.....real sad. This makes it all better, because not everyone has a decoder ring to wear while reading my handwriting. Three different templates are good too, especially for Christmas time, you can send the recipe with the homemade gift. Brilliant! Enjoy, Heidi

Texas Ranger Day and a Big Star Texas Night

Just in case you did not know, I live in the small country town of Burton, Texas. It has a population of about 269 people and I am the florist. About 3 months ago myself and a few other business owners re-formed the Burton Chamber of Commerce. The town had one in the past, but it fizzled out in the 70's.

(little history here: Burton was bi-passed in the

50's or 60's just like Radiator Springs in the Cars Movie, pretty much drying up the town)

The first thing the newly formed Chamber of Commerce needed to do was sign up members and raise some funds. So we decided to have an old fashioned street dance with Gary P. Nunn. Burton is also home to the late legendary Texas Ranger Captain McNelly. So we joined forces with the Burton Heritage Society and together we created the first annual " Texas Ranger Day and a Big Star Texas Night".

I helped to create a Logo for the town, which was then put on shirts and this big sign,

thanks to my Uncle Ronnie and Aunt Gail.

We made a Lil Ranger Town out of boxes and wild mustang saw horses to rope with hula hoop lassos,

thanks to Susan and Kim and George.

We strung lights and bunting made from bandannas across the street to hang over the crowd as they danced under the Big Star Texas Night, thanks to my brother Wyatt.

There was a fajita and bean cook-off and Texas Ranger reenactments at the old Train Depot.

Here is one of our local Artisans, Blacksmith Ricky Wegner.

He's my third cousin and makes the most amazing utensils out of metal objects such as

wrenches and railroad spikes.

I know they look like torture devices, but when you are barbecuing,

a man might need one of these utensils.

Here is one of the history markers in our town, I have my florist and home in the drugstore building.

We would love for you to drop in for a visit, there is plenty to do in see in and around the Burton area.

This one looks a bit dangerous, it is really for Mom. Replace your glue sticks with crayons and shoot.

I love this! I haven't tried it yet, I bet you have to use the super hot, melt your flesh off kind of glue gun.

I think I would wear leather gloves.

If you live in Texas, just set this in the shade, it will melt in under an hour, but if you only have

5 minutes to do this craft, put it in the full sun. White does not melt so good (reflects heat).

The only thing I don't like about the crayon art is that it smell like butt.

I have been noticing quite a bit of tillandsia plant on the web. What a wonderful plant. No dirt or container required, only humidity in the air or some water spritzing. What a great look, plus not an expensive improvement to your house that will add loads of charm. Plant some roses or jasmine, even bougainvillea if you live in a climate that does not tend to freeze. Perhaps you could even plant some peas and other veggies in your flower beds and feed your family too. An arbor over your garage door is a win win in my book. Enjoy, Heidi

This is the perfect little beach cottage. I just couldn't resist taking a picture of to share with you all. It is a little house near downtown Rockport, Texas that is being restored.

I love the shingle roof and the palm trees in front. It has porches on the front and back. Love it! Hope you all had a great weekend, so good to be back and take a hot bath in my big ole claw foot tub and not a shower at a hotel. Enjoy, Heidi

Garden Party Success!!!

The Garden Party was a success, even with 30mph wind gusts. I had a lovely embroidered canvas umbrella and a canvas Indian tent that I wanted to use, but they would have been blown into the next county for sure. It looks like Easter Garden Party might become a tradition in our family. Family, friends and good food under a big ole shady Pecan tree, doesn't get any better than that. Enjoy, Heidi

Perhaps it is the cedar shake shingles that give a home a cottage feel. Maybe it is the texture I love so much. What ever it is, I love the look. There is a product out there called Enviroshake that is a shingle with the look of wood, only made from 95% recycled materials.

I am joining my fellow bloggers in a day of silence this Friday, March 18 to honor the victims of last week’s earthquake, tsunami and aftermath that continues to plague Japan right now.
Donations are being accepted through http://www.forjapanwithlove.com/ and go directly to ShelterBox, an international aid organization that provides shelter and life-saving equipment in times of crisis.
ShelterBox were on the ground in Japan within less than 24 hours after the earthquake struck. Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless.

Ebb and Flow of Life.

Yesterday, I kept pondering the quote, "Whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should". It helped, I also unglued myself from the news and spent some time with my son, potting up some new plants we recently purchased. I bought my first Meyer Lemon tree and have had it in my home for the past few days, the fragrance from the blossoms is magnificent. I cooked chicken and broccoli, a recipe I found over at Annie's Eats and it was delish. So what I am trying to say is, "Keep calm and carry on". I made a donation, said many prayers, added a link on my blog for Japan. Now, I just need to be the best me I can be and do what I do, because that is what makes the world go round. I spent some time (5 to 10 minuets) at the home of Sting and his wife, Trudie while I was pondering the Universe. A beautiful Tuscan farm near Florence, that over looks the Valdarno Superiore valley. Breath taking. Enjoy, Heidi

Wisteria vining up the arbors, star jasmine growing on the walls and agapanthus blooming all around, these plants are easy and beautiful.

Italian cypress tress, box woods and lavender were everywhere. (easy plants for Texas as well)

Check out the old olive trees in the back. Olive trees grow very well in Texas too

and..... several hundreds perhaps thousands have been planted on the farms around Burton. (where I live)

This view reminds me of the Claire Valley in South Australia.

Jack Johnson has been my life's soundtrack for the past 3 years. I love this man. His music resonates throughout your whole heart and his lyrics have a message that sometimes I get and sometimes I don't, but I dance and sing along anyway, because it just feels good. I would have to say he is like a modern day John Lennon only a surfer. He and his band were touring in Japan last week, but everyone is safe and ok. Sadly they had to cancel the rest of their Japan tour. To support the disaster relief efforts Jack will be donating to GlobalGiving’s Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund, an organization working to help residents of the affected areas. Garden Party

Weather perfection today. Stayed outside half of the day and it felt GREAT! Trees are budding out and bees are a buzz. I love to watch the sequence of plants take turns blooming at the end of winter and the beginning of spring. First the paper whites then, daffodils, quince, saucer magnolias, camellias, pear trees and red bud trees. I dream of having a garden party like these pics. I have all of the plates, glasses, silverware and napkins. I can even whip out a few of these mason jar arrangements. I think that I am going to have to have myself a garden party. Enjoy, Heidi
